Artist Spotlight

Ta-Coumba Aiken + The Jax

Artist, activist and honorary “Mayor of Lowertown,” Ta-coumba T. Aiken is a world-renowned creator of public art—including The Jax/Gillette Children’s mural that adorns our building. Photographed by people from around the world, the mural has become the most iconic symbol of Lowertown. Unofficially titled “Stay Nice,” the work is Ta-coumba’s recreation of pieces completed by critically ill or disabled children at Gillette Children’s hospital through the Children’s Healing Arts Initiative. The project brought great joy and healing energy to these children, who were able to freely express their hopes for themselves, their families and the world.

Ta-coumba has been creating some of Minnesota’s most acclaimed art since the early 1970s. His works can be found in public and private collections including those of the Walker Art Center, The McKnight Foundation, General Mills, Herbie Hancock, Taj Mahal, and Maya Angelou. In addition, The Jax has commissioned a new interior painting from the artist, whose ultimate goal is to create art that heals hearts and souls. We at The Jax endeavor to impart this spirit of kindness and compassion within our own community, Lowertown and beyond.
